Optical Switch

TIPD has recently demonstrated a novel optical switch which uses a zone plate displayed on a spatial light modulator (SLM) to create a switch capable of addressing ten thousand output ports creating a 1x10000 switch which will enable new network architectures that can significantly cut energy use, reduce latency, and decrease the number of switches required for large data centers. The switch keeps the signal in the optical domain and allows for directionless and contentionless operation dramatically simplifying network management and significantly reducing reconfiguration times. The optical switch is capable of carrying signals with data rates of at least 1Tb/s providing for transmission well beyond today's leading edge 100Gb/s switches and is projected to require less than 1pJ/bit at 1Tb/s consistent with ARPA-e’s long term goals for data center switching efficiency.
